Upgrade from 7.0.2 to 9.0.0

Hi,

We have an old Server 2003/7.0.2 installation and we have finally acquired clearance to purchase a new Server 2012 unit to replace it. Obviously I want to install 9.0.1. In the past I have just backed up the old unit, restored to the new unit. Then installed the latest version (in this case version 9) pointing the directories at my restored path and the job is done. Is there any reason for me not to do this again?

Kind regards,

64-bit?
You may want to consider going to 64-bit. In which case, you may want to uninstall the server, keep your data directory and notes.ini, but remove everything else in the program dir and install 64-bit.  Otherwise your initial plans is fine. It's not officially tested, but we've done it in the lab and other customers have done it without issue.

Should work just fine...

Suggest staying with 32 Bit Domino until such a time you have validated all your Third Party Domino API programs are available for 64 Bit and supported with 9.0.1.

See Upgrade Cookbook for other things you may want to consider...

Hope to have an Upgrade Cookbook available for Release 9.0.x soon, but not available yet... Most things with 8.5.x are rinse and repeat for 9.0.x

Let me know how things go for you.

Didn't go to plan!

Hi John and Scott,

I shut down my 7.0.2 server install (on server 2003 r2). I did an OS copy of the entire \Domino directory to the same location on the new server. The only thing I didn't mention in my first post is that it is Server 2012 R2. I then installed Domino 9.0.1 x64. Although it installed fine the service will not start. I figured that as my initial install was x86 I should really use that. So I uninstalled, rebooted and installed 9.0.1 x86 but I get the same result. I have also tried 8.5.3 x86.

The only thing I can think of is that installing the 9.0.1 x64 version has "damaged" the directories that I copied across, or that because I did a OS copy rather than using a third party backup utility (I used to use NTBackup for these jobs, but 2003 --> 2012 isn't compatible) so I could use Backup Exec.

Any thoughts?!

Kind regards,

You could do this process
You could follow this process, but you just need to run some maintenance task on the dbs you have from the old server
